Head Instructor Adam Sparrow & Student James Parkin recently completed a three-day instructor training course held by our affiliate team Escapology BJJ.

Escapology BJJ Instructors Tom Barlow (2nd Degree Black Belt) & Chelsea Leah (1st Degree Black Belt) taught the course at their gym, Rolling Dojo, located in Cambridge.

The three-day course covered subjects such as,

  • Teaching different age ranges from young children through to adults.
  • Class structure.
  • Some useful ways to run classes.
  • Different types of lessons,
  • Lesson planning and putting together lesson plans.
  • The best ways to teach a technique.
  • Putting techniques into context.
  • Showing the most important concepts of a move.
  • Demonstrating techniques to students.
  • How to repeat movements and keep students attention using disguised repetition.
  • How to tailor information depending on a students level.
  • How to use drills to build a kinaesthetic understanding of the move or concept you are teaching.
  • The best ways and methods to deliver information to students.
  • How to correct techniques.
  • Avoiding over-teaching.
  • Engaging and building rapport with students.
  • the type of personality students want to learn from.
  • Safety when training.
  • Methods of training for competition.
  • Forms of sparring
  • How to introduce beginners to the art.

As well as theory study on each area, over the three days, Adam and James took part in a class of every description and a mini-seminar to see the information in action. Plenty of rolling with Tom, the other course participants, and the club’s regular students took place, and Tom and Chelsea also taught some great technical Jiu-Jitsu knowledge.

Awarded to both Adam and James at the end of the course was a certificate confirming that the participants had completed a Fundamentals of Coaching course for Escapology BJJ.

It was an informative three days with lots of useful knowledge learnt.
